Posters were hung in and around some institutions and schools and leaflets distributed promoting the idea. The action is in response to the tragic situation in the educational sector, at all levels.

Besides the increasing problems of the commercialization of education and worsening work conditions, including the precarization of some jobs or categories of workers, we are faced with the mass liquidation of primary and secondary schools: the government has announced now that the recent wave of hundreds of closures is just the beginning. Up to 4700 schools may be closed between now and 2014.

On September 20, members of ZSP visited the City Council in Warsaw to protest with teachers.about the scandalous behaviour of politicians towards their pay, concretely regarding the issue of "motivational bonuses". The reason for this is that in July, without notice and in the summer when most teachers are on vacation, the city decided to recalculate the way motivational bonuses are paid, setting an average amount per teacher in the budget. Unfortunately, the unions agreed to this, meaning that the money allocated would be 25% less than the average had been in 2011.

But it turned out that the city did not even fulfill this. Teachers in the Mokotow district were allocated only half of what had been promised, even after this huge cut.

In usual fashion, the politicians decided to speak about this topic at the beginning of the meeting, when few people were in attendance, instead of later, when the teachers could be present to have a voice. Nonetheless, some people from Solidarity, ZNP and ZSP were there during the debate. In response to the speeches of the teacher unionists, the vice-president Paszynski gave a scandalous speech in which he claimed that teachers earn much more than the national average, so the problem was exaggerated!

Amongst other interesting points was a hard discussion between one member of ZSP and of ZNP where the ZSP activist criticized them for not striking and taking harder action in light of such events.

After 14, a large group of teachers arrived but the city did not agree to listen to them. Unfortunately, there was no agreement by them to take a radical action, which is what ZSP is agitating for. It is very clear that in this situation, the two mainstream unions which are active in education are rather just trying to negotiate a "more humane" form of the death penalty for the workers.

Despite the fact that this is an enormous problem and our organization is not strong compared to these, we are continuing the agitation and making contacts, even in other cities. The ZSP is also publishing information about strikes in other countries and publishing interviews with comrades who have been involved. (Some of these can be found in the English section of the ZSP page: www.zsp.net.pl.)

More to follow.
September 15 was an international day of action with Dominos pizza drivers from GTWA in Australia (affiliated to the AnarchoSyndicalist Federation). The drivers' had their salaries slashed by 19% and decided to fight back, demanding, among other things, reinstatement of their wages.

Although all the reports are not in, we know that various types of actions occurred in about 35 cities across the globe. The actions ranged from informational pickets to stickers, posters and banners being put on the restaurants.

The ZSP participated with an informational picket in Warsaw and distributing leaflets about the situation. (See text below) We chose the most centrally located Dominos, on al. Jerozolimskie, hanging banners over the restaurant. The owner showed up and took photos to send in to Dominos; we suppose that people were asked to report on the actions. He then invited the protesters and police in to have pizza. We know that at another picket (in Berkeley, California), the owner went so far to offer free pizza to the customers.

(At this restaurant in Warsaw there didn't seem to be any street traffic, so information went to passersby, rather than people trying to visit the restaurant. But it shows a tactic that the bosses can try to take against such pickets.)

Reports are slowly coming in from. Comrades from the IWA protested in Australia, Brazil, France, UK, Norway, Russia, Spain and Germany. There was also a good mobilization in the United States organized by people from the WSA and the IWW. Dominos Pizza is headquartered there and that is where it has its largest market.

September 15 is an international day of solidarity with the Dominos pizza drivers Australia. A couple of months ago, this it was announced that their salaries would be reduced by 19%. The drivers started to fight back and formed the General Transport Workers Association.

Supporters of the union have held pickets in Australia. Today there will be dozens of pickets at Dominos Pizza in places such as the US, UK, Brazil, France, Spain, Germany and Norway. Thanks to pressure on the company, the drivers have won back part, but not all of their salaries. They are determined to fight not only for the return of their old wages, but for other demands, such as getting paid for overtime they are required to spend at work or that employees who only work part-time get extra payment for work on holidays, like full-time employees.

The example of our colleagues is a very good one since only by organizing and fighting we can stop the bosses' attacks against our rights and ensure our good working conditions. Remember that all the working conditions and benefits we take for granted these days, like an 8-hour workday or paid vacation, were also results of struggles made by the workers.

Nowadays, around the world, our working conditions are under attack by those who want to make more money and have economic power. But we still have our own organizational power, if we just use it!

In Poland we see that the working conditions in food services are completely awful, which many people working illegally or in semi-legal conditions, facing constant abuse from employers. We need to be aware of this and start fighting back and we call on consumers to support the workers where they struggle to improve their conditions.

If you are working in this industry, don't think that you are along with your problems and can do nothing. ZSP also has an initiative for restaurant workers of all sorts, ranging from cooks to dishwashers to people giving out flyers. Members of the ZSP Education union are distributing leaflets and trying to gather people in defense of public libraries. In particular, it is supporting the struggle of workers in two libraries in the Praga Polnoc district of Warsaw against liquidation. In one case, it is not clear that the workers will be paid in September, since their "budget ran out".

Already there was a meeting in the local council. Local residents who are in the Tenants Defense Committee, who were also present at the meeting, strongly supported the workers and calls to keep the libraries open.

Early in the morning, police vans parked all around the building where E. lives. She has been struggling with her living place, where they did not recognize her right to tenancy because she divorced from the person who originally was living there. Despite the fact that she continued to live there alone for 22 years, paying rent, they notified her that they wanted to evict her. E. went on rent strike. In the fall, an attempt to evict her was blocked. In the meanwhile, she tried to get social housing from the city. She is a qualified, low-income person, but the city does not care about it. Despite the fact that eviction onto the street is against the constitution and she was offered no place to stay by the city, the authorities decided to use force to carry out this eviction.

About 50 police forcefully removed a group of about 40 blockers. Half of the people on the blockade were senior citizens, some of whom could not defend themselves against the police and most of the blockers were women. More police were waiting for action, including some anti-riot police. E. fainted during the police action and had to be taken to the hospital. She is OK now - at least physically.

One person was arrested and there are rumors that he will be charged with "assaulting a police officer", but we will find this out later. There was no assault on his part, only he was violently removed by the police.

On July 12 we held a picket in front of Interkadra employment agency. The immediate reason for the picket was that one of their offices are recruiting replacement staff for workers who were fired while on strike.

A group of 23 workers at the Chung Hong factory in Biskupice Podgórne were fired for trying to get better working conditions. The workers were trying to demand a 300 zloty (70 euro) raise to their meager salaries. The factory did not consider any raise, even after the outside negotiator from the union cut the wage demands during negotiations, to as low as 100 zloties. A union activist who was asking workers about a strike was fired and some other workers protested. After the weekend, they found themselves locked out and decided to strike. They were then fired for disciplinary reasons.

We condemn the actions of Chung Hong and also of Interkadra, which is helping out by recruiting replacement workers from an extremely depressed area.

Interkadra is also known to us as acting against unionized workers in Carrefour. While the workers are trying to fight for regular contracts and full-time employment with benefits, Interkadra supplies a steady stream of temporary and part-time workers, and workers on trash contracts.

We told Interkadra that we condemn their role in the supply for low-paid and precarious workers to union-busting bosses and that they can expect some visits from us. They apparently got very nervous and locked the doors and shut the office while we were there.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-15464901567304443122012-07-12T16:11:00.001+02:002012-07-12T16:11:17.051+02:00Informational Action against Practices of RyanAir

The exploiter airline RyanAir is starting flights from (near) Warsaw
next week. They are busy making promotions. Activists from ZSP learned
that representatives of the company would be in the center of the city
on July 11 and decided to quickly get there and hand out leaflets about
working conditions in the company.

This action is partly a continuation of the informational campaign
related to RyanAir Don't Care. However we have updated our leaflets to
include new information about how RyanAir took over SpanAir's routes in
Spain and wanted to hire pilots and other staff on much worse
conditions. Our comrades in the CNT are suing RyanAir over this.
The ZSP in Warsaw now has more than one union. Education workers and IT workers have decided to set up branch unions.

In the past, this blog was for ZSP Warsaw, a single organization, but now it isn't.

Also there was news about various activities ZSP members were involved with, like with the tenants movement and other social protests. You can read more about these now on a new blog:
www.socialwarsaw.blogspot.com
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-34836558989980010042012-06-12T06:23:00.001+02:002012-06-12T06:23:03.347+02:00Action Against Local Government

action yesterday against the local government. There is now a campaign
to get rid of it and it seems that there is a lot of support.

(It
should be mentioned that the board of the local council is not even
democratically elected, but was appointed by the President of the city.
And it is extremely anti-social in politics.)

The
trickier question is what comes next. Both organizations have called for
more popular control, public assemblies, etc. Of course, nothing really
libertarian can function within the framework set up by the state, only
outside of its realm. The grassroots movements have to be built up,
which is an enormous task given the realities of society in Poland.

In the meanwhile, people would like to send a message that those who engage in anti-social actions cannot do so with impugnity.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-76096655602496859252012-06-08T21:09:00.001+02:002012-06-08T21:09:52.978+02:00

On June 8, the Euro Cup opened in Warsaw. The city was full of police, military police and football fans. ZSP and the Tenants Defense Committee organized a protest against the politics of the Euro. The protest was at the main roundabout on the way to the stadium, so thousands of people passed by. People spoke about the money spent on the Euro and the fact that UEFA (which was exempted from tax in Poland) and a few businesses would be big beneficiaries, but that the public has spent already almost 26 billion euros on the spectacle. At the same time that Poland is spending a lot of money on games, children will go hungry as the city privatizes school cafeterias, makes cut in social services and raises the price on everything.

This means that a whole line of subcontractors and workers have also not been paid. They threatened to block the opening of the Euro, but didn't. The workers at the stadium for the Euro, who are being cheated and receive less money than promised, threatened to strike - but didn't. This sort of situation, where many workers are not organized and are beaten with defeatism in a country with concillatory unions, is creating more and more social problems. The protestors called on people to organize themselves against these types of abuse.

A guillotine was brought and the demonstrators declared that if the politicians continue as they are going, they might have to use it. Instead of more social cuts, the only thing we want cut are the heads of the government.

After the protest a few comrades went to the police station to protest the arrest of activists from Femen who made an action at the Stadium.
Below is a leaflet which was handed out during the protest, a few more photos and a video:
We are happy to note that the eviction of Iwona, planned for tomorrow early morning has been called off. This information came after ZSP, tenants and some other supporters picketed a restaurant owned by the same woman whose company owns the building which was privatized. Besides this action, there was a picket last Monday and plans for blocking the eviction. However, the bailiff has informed us that he will wait for the court to decide. There is already a decision for the eviction and the tenant even would agree to leave, provided the city provide her with appropriate social housing.

The bailiff is most likely acting on the instructions of the owner, so we understand that she is trying to avoid trouble. But we will take more action to remind her that it would be even better if she stopped speculating in real estate and left the tenants alone to live in their homes.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-10994025987994159612012-06-03T14:16:00.001+02:002012-06-03T14:16:26.819+02:00Action against Speculator/ Restaurateur

Some members of ZSP who are part of the Tenants Defense Committee returned to court on May 16, fighting against a lawsuit resulting from the publication of a documentary video. The video interviewed tenants about their problems with their landlady, who claimed that we violated her good name.

The case is important because of very restricted freedom of speech in Poland and because tenants need to be able to tell about what is going on in their homes without fear of repression.

On May 27, a demonstration was held at the place that Maxwell Itoya was
killed two years ago. Itoya, an immigrant citizen of Nigerian descent,
was at the former Stadium market place when police arrested a man who
was selling socks. He was thrown to the ground and handcuffed, screaming
for help. When Max intervened, he was shot by a cop and bled to death.
This happened on May 23, 2010.

Then, the ZSP held an emergency demonstration onto the police station.
Other immigrants had been arrested during the incident. The widow of
Itoya (a Polish woman, left with 3 children) and others demanded an
investigation into the incident and punishment for the cop. The
Prosecutor for Praga, Renata Mazur, just recently dropped the case,
claiming their was a lack of clear evidence.

On the 27th, people again demonstrated to the police station, demanding an end to police violence.

The place Maxwell was killed had been made into a shrine, with posters
and candles, but it was destroyed when the city renovated the area to
build the world's most expensive football stadium. Most of the traders
who Max had known are long gone from Poland. Not only because of the
racism and constant problems with the police: the gentrification of the
area and the liquidation of trading caused job loss for thousands of
immigrants.

On the last weekend of May, there was an occupation of a square in central Warsaw. Members of ZSP took part in the event, speaking with passerbys about various issues. The event was immediately harrassed by police which tried in various ways to get rid of the protest. Among the most disgusting ways is something that authorities in Krakow thought up to deal with a similar protest: to try to charge protestors money for using the territory! The action was legalized, but only for a few days, and after the legalization ran out, the police busted the occupation. This included seizing property, including personal property like people's wallets. The next day a picket in defense of freedom of assembly was held in the same place.

On May 24, several museums in Warsaw went on strike, closing their doors to the public. ZSP in Warsaw has been in solidarity with museum workers.

On
May 19, during the annual Museum Night event in Warsaw, members of ZSP
held an informational action about budget cuts in cultural institutions,
loss of jobs and repression of one worker who was involved in action to
save his work place.

A few cultural institutions in Warsaw will probably be liquidated
because of budget cuts, including the Technical Museum, the Warsaw
Chamber Opera and the Praha Cinema. We are in solidarity with the workers of these institutions, who are fighting against their closure.

In the case of the Praha Cinema, a publically controlled institution
located near the offices of ZSP, there has been a good mobilization in
its defense, with lots of support from local residents. This has saved
it from closure, but the future of the cinema is not clear.
Additionally, one worker from the cinema was fired because of his role
in the protests. All those involved condemn the actions of the
management and support the worker and are ready to make new protests.

The workers of the 137-year old Technical Museum and the Chamber
Opera are asking people to support their efforts to get special status
and funding so that they can remain open. Thousands of people visited
the Technical Museum last night, where we informed of the dangers to
these institutions and the repression at the cinema, asking people to
support, sign online petitions, protest, etc.
Two cultural institutions in Warsaw's Palace of Culture, the Dramatic
Theatre and the Technical Museum, are in danger because of budget cuts
but outside the Palace, people could also see how the city is building,
at huge expense, a special zone for football fans for the Euro 2012. We
also invited people to protest the city's policies with us when the Euro
opens on June 8.
Members of both ZSP and the Tenants' Defense Committee protested at the City Council on May 17. A group of parents were also present who successfully fought to overturn a huge increase in fees for nursery schools. The administrative court ruled against the City Council's decision... but then the City Council decided just to introduce a new rule about payment. This time, their idea was to charge parents an hourly rate for these schools and the effect is going to be just the same.
Not many parents came, as the Council rushed with this and the project to be voted on was only given to Councilpeople to read at the beginning of the session.

Since parents with young children came to discuss this point, some Councilpeople proposed that this point come at the beginning of the Session, but the neoliberal vampires put it at the end. Since nobody knows when these Sessions can end, this means that parents would have to wait until the evening - we have seen these types of votes take place even after midnight. This was of course a deliberate way to discourage people from staying. And the point only came up after 9PM. At that point... the ruling party declared that they would like to postpone the discussion. At least that will give people more time to prepare a protest.

The Council also decided to liquidate some schools and raise the price of water dramatically.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-82430696116152994642012-05-18T23:16:00.001+02:002012-05-18T23:16:45.201+02:00Case Postponed Again

Some members of ZSP Warsaw who are members of the Tenants' Defense Committee are being sued for a video they made and posted on the internet where tenants describe their problems with their landlady and she is filmed in action. After months and months of delay, we were back in court on May 16. Nothing much happened and the case was postponed again until October.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-46320677558632444562012-05-13T10:39:00.001+02:002012-05-13T11:10:14.691+02:00Picket at Empik

On May 13, ZSP picketed at another Empik bookstore in Warsaw, kicking off a national campaign against the chain. Contact with Empik workers started a couple of years ago when we received many denounciations against the firm from people around Poland during the "Worst Employer of the Year" contest. Every year, more and more employees wrote with the same complaints: unpaid overtime work, being forced to work while ill, having trash contracts, being forced to do heavy or dangerous work, lack of proper health and safety measures and mobbing. Now a few employees around Poland want to fight back and one is even suing the chain for unpaid overtime. And we offer our support to them and all workers who would like to organize.

Quite a number of workers are now promoting this campaign, although, fearing repression, many prefer to act covertly or through the internet, where they are active telling about their conditions and fighting with Empik PR agents who are attacking all fora where they are present.

We are hoping that they will persevere. Organizing in such workplaces is not yet successful in Poland and many of the workers treat this as a temporary shit job until something better comes along. With the campaign we hope to undermine the notion that shit jobs have a place on the market, arguing that all work should be properly paid and that people should speak out against the abuse that is common in the retail sector.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-12501868657391226282012-05-13T10:17:00.002+02:002012-05-13T11:08:36.735+02:00Case of Jerzy Madziarowicz-MIX reopened

In November 2011, a young worker, Karol M., suffered at accident at work on a construction site in Warsaw. He was employed illegally and did not have proper safety equipment, not even a helmet. He fell into a coma. The owner of the temporary work agency Jerzy Madziarowicz-MIX (also related to the property where the accident occurred) denied that Karol worked for him. The family, which was faced with the double horror of the accident and the financial consequences (since Karol was not insured), decided to fight, so that other workers would not be harmed by Madziarowicz and to get compensation for Karol.

Luckily, Karol regained consciousness and is undergoing rehabilitation. But he is far from well. However, the family is deterred from making a civil case against Madziarowicz because the State Labour Inspectorate and Public Prosecutor's office usually do nothing in cases like this, leaving workers and their families to fend for themselves. And then lawyers argue that the Prosecutor's office "found nothing" and therefore their clients are not guilty of anything.

Neither of these institutions wanted to do anything about the case. If it weren't for the persistence of the family and some support from us, they would have ignored the whole thing. As it is, they tried to close the case. Thanks to an appeal, there is now a court ruling to reopen the investigation. There was also a new report on the case on the radio. We hope that other workers hear about it in this way and think carefully before accepting illegal jobs in construction. However, we know the reality in Poland of tens of thousands of unemployed labourers trying to get any job to survive. And the hundreds of shady "agencies" and "employers" that use them, exposing them to risk, with no insurance and little pay. We hope that this case can highlight this problem and that these agencies will understand that they cannot get away with murder with no consequences. And that the workers will get together and fight in mutual self-defense.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-64408622041017351832012-05-13T09:52:00.001+02:002012-05-13T09:52:05.304+02:00Action during Roche Corporate Meeting

On May 10, representatives of the Roche
headquarters in Basel organized a meeting with Roche Polska workers in
Warsaw. Since over 100 people attended, the meeting was held in a cinema
in the shopping mall next to the Warsaw office. We were informed of the
event so we organized an informational action.
First, leaflets were left in the cinema and posted around the
shopping mall. Security was tight and it was difficult to stay in one
place. Information about Roche practices were handed out also to people
in the shopping mall and then posted in the neighbouring area between
the mall and Roche offices.

We condemned the practices of the pharmaceutical giant and corporate
greed in general, calling for decent working conditions and stable
employment in that company.

The reaction of the shoppers was better than expected; many took
leaflets and some expressed their disapproval or disgust at the
corporation's practices.

No other action happened because of the very tight mall security
around the venue, something quite unusual. (Perhaps they were expecting
us.)
The following is a personal opinion piece and does not necessarily reflect the view of everybody.

In recent weeks, I have been a little surprised by small rebellions and about-turns on the part of various authorities. In Poland we have become quite used to the fact that courts and controlling authorities usually take the side of those in power: bosses, landlords and city officials. But we have seen some small victories lately in legal matters.

One case was described here, about how our colleagues were not punished for making an illegal demo. We have also, in the past few weeks seen cops who refused to help carry out an eviction, which is something they usually do, even when the evictions are illegal. We saw courts come down on the city for its repeated refusal to reveal public information. And, the best news of all: parents who fought against the outrageous raising of nursery school fees not only overturned the rate increases, but caused that, for the first time in a long time, the schools in Warsaw will actually be free, pending action from the city council.

From the point of view of somebody who has observed how people get fucked over right and left and how the authorities rarely help or even uphold existing laws protecting rights, it is actually good to see some people who didn't give up and won, despite the odds. Because, the fact is that most people don't even try, because they think they have no chances.

On the other hand, we have been trying to convince people for years that direct action is the best method. And this has been helped by the fact that people see that the courts don't help.

An example of this is the case of Karol M., who had an accident at work last November and was in a coma. Luckily, he survived, regained consciousness and, although he is far from well, he is undergoing rehabilitation. In his case, we made some direct actions, but there was little to do. We exposed the people he worked for, the boss disappeared. But there was still the case of a lawsuit the family wanted to make.

Most anarchists of course are not big fans of the court or solving issues that way. Some are much stricter than others in this respect. But in this case, where the family has considerable medical bills not covered by anybody and Karol may never work again, the natural thing the family wants is financial compensation to cover these expenses.... and this was not something we could manage by direct action this time. (If it were a bigger or better known firm, there could have been more chances, but here the boss didn't depend on the firm's brand at all.)

In order to make the civil claim, they need some opinion from the Labour Inspectorate or the Public Prosecutor's office of wrongdoing. And here, the family suffered a more typical experience in Poland: these authorities did nothing, did not even want to deal with the case. Pressure was made, but still they did not take steps. So now this week the family is going to court against these authorities.

It's only partly for these reasons though that we tell people, take direct action. Even if people want to take some legal action, we say take other action at the same time. And usually we are right, and it is the direct action that makes the difference.

Of course, some people don't want to do it. They prefer a legal way. Like the parents who took the city to court. They got lucky. Other parents, who are fighting against the privatization of school cafeterias, also intended to do that, and probably still will file a case. But unlike the first group of parents, these ones went through the farsical process of going to city and local council meetings and saw how the politicians are ready to bend the rules and know they can get away with it, because the controlling authorities are placed their by their bosses and are in their pockets. Those parents decided to make a strike against payments and we are hoping this action will bring results.

But it is more than that. It is about the enpowering experience of people organizing themselves, of doing something together, of learning not to give up and quit. And this is something that cannot be learned by going to a court and leaving the outcome up to the judges.

All things considered, while we should be encouraging this direct action as much as possible, I don't feel like condemning the people who also say they will start a court process. Maybe that might impress some anarchists who are interested in being more correct than other people, but it is not a good way to deal with people who aren't anarchists but with whom we work and share some common struggles. So I will be in the court this week, supporting Karol's family, who went through hell and who get no support from any of the institutional "protectors of labour" - not the labour inspectorate, nor the mainstream trade unions. And I also have my fingers crossed for the parents who are taking legal action against the illegal acts of the city. They are also taking direct action, which is great, but the legal case can help to add to the legitimacy of their actions among other parents, not all of whom have the courage or faith in action to support the strike.
During the march we spoke about the worsening situation of the working class: the widespread use of trash contracts, raising the retirement age and the capitalist attack on all that workers' had gained in the past hundred years. We criticized the mainstream unions, which compromise with the bosses and refuse to call strikes, even when faced with the most drastic of situations.

ZSP had banners with slogans like "Enough compromises" "the Class war continues" and "We don't want to die working" and gave out leaflets with criticized the pseudoleft, which was also marching on that day. In particular we condemned the neoliberal formation, RP, which incorporated some liberal lifestyle issues and poses as a left party, while voting to raise the retirement age. We also had pointed out before the demo how the nationalists try to take over May Day and infiltrate the working class movements.

Passing by streetside cafes which were open for business, we pointed out to the people at the tables that the staff there earn less per hour than the price of their lattes, and they not only have to work on May Day, but get no paid vacations at all.

The demo drew a lot of interest, both from passersby and from the media. Various people took part in the march. Besides the ZSP and the Anarchist Federation, there were a lot of individual anarchists, some people from the Indignant group, as well as different radical leftists who joined the only anticapitalist march on this day.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7911314039491991977.post-13445879349935294622012-04-26T23:00:00.000+02:002012-04-28T16:28:12.906+02:00Against the Politics of the Euro

Over
the past couple of years, more and more social and political
organizations and grassroots initiatives in Warsaw have been fighting
against the city's social spending policies. We have seen movements and
protests against public housing policy, the closure of schools, the
privatization of school cafeterias and huge fee increases in nursery
schools. (The latter have been cancelled due a judgment in favor of
parents who launched a legal challenge against that decision.) All of
these initiatives share a common sentiment: that the city does not care
about the basic social needs of most of its residents, who are working
but poor and who cannot afford private hospitals, education and rents.

Among the city's big showcase investments is the National Stadium in
Warsaw and other investments related to the Euro 2012. There were many
scandals related to the stadium itself. While it was built, there was a
wildcat strike and a few workers died due to negligence. The ZSP was
active in exposing this and getting workers to speak out, as well as
helping Ukrainian workers to get better housing conditions. Despite the
poor working conditions for many on the building site, the stadium is
reportedly the most expensive one in the world.

When the stadium finally opened, the roof didn't work and there were
other safety concerns. The city didn't even want to let the public in
for the grand opening. Despite all these problems, the politicians
overseeing the project received huge bonuses.

Around the area of the stadium, a gentrification process began and
some people were evicted. The city condemned some houses without
providing replacement housing for everybody. And thousands of people,
mainly immigrants, were forced out of the marketplace that used to be
around the stadium. Instead of the highly popular market, which was the
largest in Europe, local residents now have a parking lot and rising
rents.

All of this is costing taxpayers a lot of money, but most of the
benefits are for the elites and the few business people who will make
some money off the event. In the meantime, the city claims that there is
no money in the budget for anything. As parents who were protesting the
privatization of school cafeterias pointed out, the price of the zone
for football fans in front of the Palace of Culture will be eight times
the money the city wants to save by eliminating the jobs of school
cooks.

Tenants organizations, ZSP and others will protest on June 8 when the Euro opens with its first match in Warsaw.

The Tenants' Defense Committee will also organize a EURO REALITY TOUR
of the slums around the National Stadium during the Euro. The first
dates are planned for June 9-12 and tours will be held in Polish,
English, Russian and Spanish. Visitors to Warsaw can see the state of
public housing and effects of gentrification around the area, as well as
visit some interesting landmarks that haven't been destroyed by
developers yet.

Finally there is a verdict in the case against Jakub and Marek related to a demonstration from 14 months ago. Then the authorities tried to make a crap case against them, with various bullshit charges. Today the court decided that our friends are not guilty. This means that the state treasury has to pay the cost of the court proceedings - another waste of our tax money just meant to try and scare people from protesting.

It didn't work.
The verdict went out on TV since the case had drawn a lot of attention. Everybody was really happy and afterwards there was a little celebration.
